An Ethiopian 20th century headrest hand-carved from a fine grain wood. Headrests have been used in Ethiopia for generations to protect elaborate hairdos or keep the sleeper’s head off the ground and away from bugs and insects. Some headrests also doubled as a portable stool and in many areas a man would never leave his compound without his headrest. Headrest styles vary from region to region and are usually created by the owner or a local craftsman.
