In Ethiopia, local women potters create contemporary handmade pottery collections that reflect the organic beauty and culture of Ethiopia. individually handmade and dried (unbaked) in the sun. The potters burnish, or hand polish the pottery to create a sheen. The pottery is then baked in a rudimentary oven, which is a hole in the ground. The pottery finish is a natural clay color. To create the black patina to selected pottery pieces, dried eucalyptus leaves are applied over the baked pottery and left to cool. The cold pottery is removed from the ashes with a black finish.
Note: This pottery piece was not fired in a kiln and should not be used as a vase with water.
